Remembering Fallen Journalists (May 3)

Dear Member

May 3 is World Press Freedom Day.

The Singapore Press Club would like to mark the day by asking members to observe a minute’s silence in memory of the 48 journalists who were killed worldwide in 2016 while performing their duties.

Since 1992, the number of journalists killed has reached 1,237, according to the International Association of Press Clubs.

Last year, among those killed were Soe Moe Tun of Myanmar’s Daily Eleven and Al Jazeera’s Ibrahim Omar in Syria.

Show your support by observing a minute’s silence on May 3 between 6pm and 9pm local time and using/posting/tweeting #remembering. You can also post a selfie or change your profile picture to the press ribbon (

Thank you.

Diplomats Quarterly Golf Challenge (May 5)

Dear Golf League members

We are already into the second quarter of 2017 and some of you may be wondering when our Diplomats Quarterly Challenge will start. I’m glad to say we’ve finally nailed down a date and venue for our first match – May 5, Friday morning, at Sembawang Country Club.

We’d like as many of our members to sign up to support the event. As before, our captain Patrick Daniel will select the team to play against the diplomats whilst the rest of us will compete in the Golf League and strive to move up the leaderboard before we crown the champion at our annual tournament.

We have negotiated a discounted rate at $94.50+GST per golfer, with members of SCC paying only the buggy fee. We will be giving out prizes to the best performing players at a post-game lunch which the Press Club will pick up the tab.

Please sign up with the secretariat at by 26 April.

We look forward to a great day on the greens. Golf is a game of the mind, stay calm, focus and golf on.

Wanted: Inspired Storytellers to be Part of the Making of a Memorial

Dear Member

You are invited to a guided tour of the showcase “Remembering our Founders – The Making of a Memorial” at the Waterview Room at the Flower Dome of Gardens by the Bay.

Following the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, members of the public made many suggestions as to how to remember and honour Singapore’s founding father. In response, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mooted the idea of a Founders’ Memorial to honour not just Mr Lee but also our founding leaders, and appointed Mr Lee Tzu Yang to chair a committee to gather views from the public to see if this idea resonates with Singaporeans.
The committee has been engaging the public and stakeholder groups over the past two years on the narrative, form and location for the memorial – as well as the meanings and journeys it could offer for different visitor groups.

The showcase recounts the milestones of the engagement process during which the committee sought Singaporeans’ views regarding the content, features and location of the memorial. The showcase also presents the findings of the engagement process and allows visitors to contribute their own views.

Here’s a video of what the showcase looks like:

Date: 10 April 2017 (Monday)
Time: 10am (please gather outside Waterview Room)
Programme 10.00am: Guided Tour of the Showcase
10.30am: Garden Cruiser cum audio tour to Bay East Garden (pls note, in event of wet weather, the buggy ride will not run)
11.00am:  End of Tour
Directions ·         If you are travelling by car or taxi, please see the attached pdf for directions to the Visitor Centre.  The Waterview Room is a 5-minute walk from the Visitor Centre (follow directions to the Flower Dome).

Renew membership at old rates

Dear Member

Many thanks to members who attended our AGM on March 30. We are glad to report that our new Constitution has been finally approved by our members and endorsed by the Registrar of Societies.

Our new constitution provides for new, higher membership fees and new membership classes, and allows for changes to be made from time to time, on the recommendation of the Management Committee (MC).

While the Constitution is effective from March 31, 2017, the members agreed that the MC may delay the increments for the time being as part of the Club’s membership drive. The MC has decided to make the new rates effective from June 1, 2017.

So, current members can renew their memberships at  the old rates for renewal if they do so before  June 1.

Memberships that expire in 2017 are eligible for renewal at the current rates if renewal applications are received before June 1.

As an additional benefit, current members are also encouraged to renew their memberships for up to 3 years at the old rates.

New members who apply before June 1 will also be eligible for membership at the old rates. Please do encourage your colleagues who are not yet members to sign up.

The old rates (per year) that will prevail until May 31, 2017:
Regular: $30
Associate: $100
Corporate: $100
Life (Regular) one-time: $400
Life (Associate) one-time: $1,000

The new  rates (per year) that will kick in from June 1, 2017:
